SSB and CWU Agree On Money, But Disagree On Principle
posted (January 4, 2018)
The Social Security Board and the Christian Workers Union have agreed on a raise for employees, but are having a dispute over how backpay is to be calculated. Social Security says the retroactive pay should not be compounding, while the union says it should. It's a difference of about 5.3% which Social Security has agreed to pay in the union's favour. Great, so end of dispute, right? Not so fast, because Social Security wants the union to accept, quote, "that the Board is not setting a precedent for past or future negotiations relating to 'salary increase or retroactive salary increase."

But the union isn't about to accept that. It says, quote, "It is unconscionable that SSB compounds its error by wanting us to become complicit…"

So, basically, the Union has rejected the board's offer because of the condition pinned to it. And that's where it stands tonight as negotiations continue.
