The PG Highway, No Left Turns Allowed
posted (January 22, 2018)
The early part of the Phillip Goldson Highway between Belize City and the Haulover Bridge is now in the midst of a long reconstruction. The messy roads are something Belizeans were prepared for, but the new median is not.

The median now prevents drivers from making left turns. They are now forced to drive all the way to the roundabout to get to the other side of the road.

This has been a major point of frustration for many as so many city residents are already used to the luxury of simply making a left turn into places like Brodies or Benny's, or Independence Drive down by the Divine Mercy church.

In August of last year we did a story on the reconstruction of the highway and ARSENIO Burgos from Cisco Construction explained the change as democratization.

Arsenio Burgos, Cisco Construction Limited
"Between Buttonwood Bay and Chetumal Street round about what we will have is a 6 lane highway with dividers. There is going to be a median in between so the idea of safety, by the way, is that you never make a left-hand turn. That is the idea of a median. Now that is going to create some inconvenience for your present commuters because they are used to making left-hand turns. You will not be able to make left-hand turns. You will have to go to the roundabout and make your left hand turn there an then come back but the divider the median, if you want to put it, is Democratic. If you want to go on the other side you will have to make your left hand turn each way wherever you go. You are going to have to plan."

The reconstruction that is being done by Cisco Construction is slated to take two years.
