Cops Try To Contain Retaliations
posted (January 24, 2018)
And the eruption of violence in the Belize and Cayo Districts caused the police to call a mid-week press conference. No doubt under pressure from a 2017 that saw what our numbers show is a record number of murders, Police Commissioner Allen Whylie said that his officers are doing all they can to contain retaliations:

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police
"Today is a very somber occasion. Regrettably, I need to inform you that yesterday we had three different shooting incidents across the country which resulted in the deaths of four individuals and also four other persons were injured as a result of those three incidents. We had an incident in San Pedro where two persons were shot yesterday evening. We also had an incident last night in Ladyville where again four persons were shot, two succumbed to their injuries. And we also had an incident last night after 10 pm in Roaring Creek village where two persons were shot and one succumbed to their injuries. Whilst the head of National Crimes Investigation branch will give you the details of those incidents, I would like to appeal to the public to continue to assist us in sharing information in respect to these incidents that have occurred as well as other incidents of crime that have occurred. As a result of these incidents, I have directed that additional investigators from the Crimes Investigation branch be deployed to assist the investigators where these three incidents have occurred. We have also launched a number of stop-and-search operations and raids to seek suspects in these incidents as well as to look at associates in the effort to reduce the possibility of any retaliation from associates and friends of those individuals who were killed. I have also directed Mr. Williams who heads up the mediation team to get his team involved to visit these areas where these incidents occurred and to speak to the family members and friends of the deceased to see how the mediation team can assist to mediate whatever ongoing conflict is occurring."

There have been 11 murders recorded so far in January.

Police promised a full release and review of 2017 crime statistics for mid January, but with one week left in that month, web heard nothing else on that.
