posted (January 25, 2018)

Today the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jama' At held a press conference to share more about their fourth annual convention that will take place this weekend.

The convention is chance for them to share more about their beliefs and practices with the general public. President Naveed Mangla shared more.

Naveed Mangla, President - Ahmadiyya Muslim Community
"We have representatives from Guatemala, Mexico, Canada, Honduras. Some of them have arrived and some are coming tomorrow. We invite all our local Belizean Brothers and Sisters to come and learn about what this religion is. The reason why it is important to learn about Islam is that right now 24% of the world population is Muslim."

"So instead of ignoring it and looking at whatever the media has to offer it is best that you come and learn from those people that are practicing the religion and are living the religion day and night. Come and ask us why we belong to the religion instead of just listening to the second party and what they have to say about this religion."

"The theme of our convention this year which has been given to us by our spiritual head who resides in the UK is the development of a country so most of the speeches will be related to this topic that being Muslims or generally being Belizeans how can we develop what God has given us."

The group also took time to talk about the Ahmadiyya basketball league. The league now in its fourth season has made some big expansions for the upcoming season.

Rodvern Lino - Commissioner
"Our U-13 league is open to female athletes as well who would like to participate. We have eight teams already registered. We still have space for two more if we have enough athletes then we will expand it to ten teams in U-13 division. In the U-17 we have ten teams so that is already full and in our U-21 division, we have 13 teams. The reason we have intended is that we realize that we don't have enough competitions for our young people in that age group. We have teams coming from all over. We have from Orange Walk, Ladyville, Belmopan, Dangriga, 8 miles, and we also have teams coming all the way from Mexico.”

The convention opens tomorrow and will end on Saturday. It starts at 2 pm at the ITVET and The opening basketball game is on Sunday at the SJC gymnasium.
