posted (January 25, 2018)

Tonight, a 42-year-old Belize City father, Sheffield Brown, is lucky to be home and not behind bars after he admitted in court to assaulting his 13-year old son and threatening him.

Brown who well known to police appeared this morning before Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford where he was read two criminal offenses of common assault upon his son and using threatening words upon the boy.

The incident occurred at the child's home in the presence of the baby sitter and his older sister.

According to a report made by the Baby Sitter, she told police that the boy was home when Brown came to see him. He asked his son to cook some noodles for him.    The boy refused and that's when his father stoned him with an object and threatened to kill him.

In court, Brown who was unrepresented told Senior Magistrate, Aretha Ford that at the time he was under the influence.

"I would never do that to my own son. I would never hurt my kids," he added.

He begged the court for leniency and asked to be fined and not confined.

The Magistrate fined him $$200 for common assault and $300 for threatening words.

The fine was higher for the second offence since the father has four previous convictions for threatening words.

She ordered him to pay by March 15 - or he will face months in jail.
