New Fortune thief Claims Cops Beat Him

On Sunday New Fortune Restaurant in Belize City was robbed. Businessman Xin Hui Zhang reported to police that he was at a restaurant when a man entered and held him up at gunpoint.

Three phones and $800 dollars in cash was stolen. Police reviewed surveillance footage and identified the culprit as Joshua Smith. When they apprehended him he was wearing the same clothes seen in the footage. Smith insists that he is not the right person. He also claims he was beaten by police.

Today he appeared in court where he was charged with robbery. Smith pled not guilty, but Chief Magistrate Fraser was not able to offer him bail because the offence was committed with a firearm. He was remanded into custody until March 16th. Smith says that police mistook him for another person and then, beat him and then refused to take to the hospital for examination.
