Measles In CA, Not Been in Bze Since ‘91
posted (January 30, 2018)
Measles has appeared in our region - and the ministry of Health is warning Belizeans to be on guard.

They say that they were recently alerted of a positive case of measles in Guatemala, which is suspected to have been imported from Germany.

The Ministry notes that measles has not reported in Belize since 1991. They add, however, that in the region of the Americas, the number of cases have increased from 92 to 271 in 2016 and 2017. The Caribbean is also reporting "highly suspicious cases" imported from the United Kingdom.

The Ministry reminds that if you should be on the lookout for the following symptoms: any person with a fever lasting for 4 days; a rash which started on the neck and face that later on scattered to rest of the body. That may be accompanied by a cough, runny nose, or conjunctivitis.

Suspicious cases need to be isolated and investigated to avoid the spread of the disease to persons susceptible to it.
