DPM Faber Hopes For Better Belize-US Relations

And while Galanek couched it diplomatically, it's a bold and ominous message - surely not surprising coming from Trump but what does the Government of Belize have to say about Trump's message? We spoke to Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber today and he said Belize has no beef with the US and that Trump should really re-consider before burning bridges with Belize.

Hon. Patrick Faber, Minister of Education
"My heart sank, to an extent the president is right to an extent the extend is that America should have the right to do what they want, they are, just as the rest of us are, they are an autonomous entity, an autonomous state and should have the right to do what they see fit so if they want to move the capital then that is fine. The portion that he said that I absolutely don't agree with and in fact when I listened to it on my television last night, my heart absolutely sank to say that it really is unfortunate that he made such a comment because these very same countries that may not have agreed with him on that point, these are the countries that support the United States, the United States can't be great on it's own."

"Likewise they depend on us for support I want to make that clear as well because in their efforts to keep out Narcotics and other elements out of the United States they rely on us so it is a reciprocal partnership."

"I am hoping that through the efforts of diplomacy we can work these things out. It is never in our interest, in little Belize or even in our region to quarrel with the great United States."
