BTEC Trains Service Sector Employees
posted (February 6, 2018)
After three weeks of training, 46 participants successfully graduated from a Wait Staff and Housekeeping workshop hosted by BTEC.

The participants ranged from veterans in the hospitality industry to newcomers who were hungry to learn.

We found out more about what they learned:

Christine Smith, Manager of BTEC
"Housekeeping, we assume that everyone knows how to clean but there is a skill to cleaning and the skill to cleaning is not just move dirt around but to actually get rid of germs and make sure that you have a clean environment for persons who are there. The training covered the Green Clean, what are the products we use for cleaning, what are the harms of some of these products, and then it went into a full practice on how to clean properly."

"They start off with a soft skill training which covers the attitudes and behaviours that employers want from their employees and then it goes into customer service. As long as you are working in any industry in Belize you have to have an appreciation of what good customer service is and then it went into their technical area. For the wait staff training, we looked at napkin designs. There was a session on wines. Appreciation of the different types of wines. What goes well with food. How do you pour the wine? What temperature should the wine be at. The proper glass wear as well as the set of tables."

Sahar Vasquez, reporter
"Do you think that this sets a new standard for this form of employment?"

Christine Smith, Manager of BTEC
"Well yes, it does because training is important. It is crucial to the development of anyone. Our training is different because it doesn't just focus on the technical component, it focuses on building the person so making sure that they are confident enough and have the skills that employers need."

The participants will now work on seeking employment with the continued support of BTEC.
