PUP Bash Bradley For Contract Extensions
posted (February 8, 2018)

Turning now to politics, last night you heard Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley defending his decision to give City Administrator Candice Miller - reportedly a 4 year contract renewal - just as his term is winding down.

Now those who study governance and public administration will tell you that for an outgoing elected official - ethically, that’s just not “the done thing.”  But, in his defence, The mayor said, quote, “I'm the mayor up until the last day of this month. I do things which I consider to be in the best interest of the City. People may disagree. They may complain, but I am the mayor.”

Indeed, Mayor Bradley added that he did it to give security of tenure to all staff at city hall, including, apparently, contract officers.

Today, the Chairman of the PUP said that if the PUP is elected, these contracts will be up for review:…

Henry Charles Usher - PUP Chairman
"He doesn't stand on any firm legal footing to be even speaking about security of tenure. Isn't it ironic that the UDP under Dean Barrow remove security of tenure for judges but now Darrell Bradley is trying to give security of tenure to his father Joe Bradley because Joe Bradley is a senior manager in this UDP city council so really Darrell is trying to ensure that his father remains employed which I find very comical. I can tell you categorically that the next PUP city council after March 7th will review all of these contracts, we'll look at them and if there is anything illegal, anything that can be changed it will be changed.”

Later on in the news, you’ll hear about the PUP’s plans for its national convention this weekend.
