PUP National Convention Come Rain Or Shine
posted (February 8, 2018)

But whether the rivers continue rising or not, the PUP is moving forward with its national convention on Sunday.  They had already postponed it two weeks ago due to rain - and they aren’t about to do so again.  The Party Chairman says it will be a massive event:

Henry Charles Usher - PUP Chairman
“Well today we're having our walk through before Sunday's massive national convention.  We expect to have over 15,000 and we're preparing for over 15,000 party supporters, members of the public, Belizeans from far and wide to be here on Sunday.  It'll be the biggest convention in the history of this country. We're bringing in over 230 buses from outside in the districts and we have to make sure that the buses come in, that they offload their passengers on a timely manner. But I'm looking forward to it. This Sunday is our Superbowl. Last week they had Superbowl in the US, well, this Sunday the PUP is having its Superbowl on February 11th right here at the ITVET.”

Jules Vasquez
“Sir, now, when you say the biggest convention ever, these things cost money.  Are we to understand form the scale of the convention you all are planning that the PUP is flush with cash?”

Henry Charles Usher
“Well, I wouldn’t say we are flush with cash, but we have been getting the support form the business community, form our supporters, to make sure that we have a good convention, to make sure that we are ready for this election come March 7th.The national convention is not separate from the campaign, it is part of the campaign, it creates momentum here in the city, but it creates also a new energy for our supporters, for our base to see that the pup is there, the pup is ready, the PUP is united.”

Jules Vasquez
“Will this be a true unity convention. We know the last time under John Briceno's leadership, that there was a major national convention in Dangriga, it was not, at that time, a true unity convention because there were those representatives which absented themselves.  We know that it’s hard to get everyone on the same page. Will everyone be here?  Is that your expectation?”

Henry Charles Usher
“I can tell you that everyone who can be here will be here.”

And if there is heavy weather out there, Usher says that it won’t affect them

Henry Charles Usher
“You’re right we have heard some suggestion that there would be a lot of flooding but this time because we had a little more time to prepare for the convention we have made sure we put in place logistics for these people to come out.  I am not worried about that in terms of the turnout that we will have here on Sunday but certainly we have to continue to monitor any type of flooding situation."
