Making Wetlands Lessons Stick
posted (February 9, 2018)
Last week we told you about World Wetlands Day. It was celebrated in Crooked Tree - which is known as the crown of wetland ecosystems in Belize. Well, the Belize Audubon Society along with their partners want to ensure that stakeholders and the general public understand the important role wetlands play especially when it comes containing those flood waters. The team organized an educational session today where the media and other partners were invited to learn more about wetlands. We dropped by.

Dr. Ed Boles, Aquatic Ecologist
"Wetlands are those areas that are routinely flooded during part of the year and so that area converts to an aquatic environment fish and other things are coming in and they are utilizing the resources that are there, and then when the waters recede they become dry land again but during the wet season the absorption of flood waters is very important because without those wetlands more places downstream would be flooded."

Dareece Chuc, Environmental Education Director, Belize Audubon Society
"The entire month of February we use as a time to highlight the importance of wetland ecosystems to the country and we also use it as an opportunity to bring to the attention of the public the collective effort that we are making as a country to continue to conserve and preserve wetland ecosystems in Belize. So today's presentation we invited a group of stakeholder from the Belize City area to learn about the Crooked Tree wetlands , the ecological importance, the importance to human communities."

"We hope that the people who participate in these session that we have will continue to spread the information to their families to their co-workers. It is about creating awareness and getting people to understand and take ownership of wetland ecosystems in our country and help us with the management of these important wetlands."

Another presentation such as this on will be held at UB in Belmopan on February 14th. The event is called Love your wetlands - a fitting name for the occasion.
