Killer Bees Killed Dogs
posted (February 12, 2018)
A Belize City family lost their three watchdogs to killer bees this weekend. It happened around 4:00 on Saturday afternoon when the man of the house was cutting the yard. The noise seemed to have disturbed a bee nest which was burrowed into the ground. When the bees let loose - the three dogs - who were chained up - were at their mercy as their master had to run for cover:...

"As he was cleaning the yard, about 20 minutes the bees swarm in and we couldn't do anything. A lot of bees just attack the dog and the bees attacked him as well. He managed to run away and there was nothing he could do. He sat down to think about what he could do, how he could help the animals since all of them were chained. Three dogs."

"They were under attack at the time from the bees?"

Mary Sanchez - Bees Killed Her Dogs
"Yes, three of them. When the bees start the dogs started to run and bark and so they make noise. The animal came and attack them."

Reporter
"But, they are all chained up?"

Mary Sanchez - Bees Killed Her Dogs
"Yes, they are all chained up."

Reporter
"They can't come off the chain and you all cannot come and unchain them because you would get swarmed as well."

"Yes, definitely and it's so terrible and terrifying, very emotional. Eventually my husband managed to put about 4 clothes on him and tied clothes on his face. I texted one of my brother and he told me to try the fish spray. My daughter in law ran to the shop and got a fish spray and started to spray but he still got stung, his head, his ears, his hands are swollen and he finally managed to just loose the dog, but by that time it's too late because the first big dog was already dead then this black was just trying to fight, staggering. The next little one buried his face in the ground. The 3 of them we lost. We have them so long, beautiful dogs, Jules."

"You cannot get agriculture to come and deal with them?"

Mary Sanchez - Bees Killed Her Dogs
"Well, actually that is the most frightening part, I tried to call from morning. I called agriculture and they told me that how the guys are in the field, there's nothing they can do until they come back. They don't know if they will be in today in the afternoon or tomorrow. So, it's just hopeless. These animals are dangerous before they attack anyone else, I really want somebody come and take them out or do something about it and I have 2 grandchildren. I have a disable child and that is the most frightening if they come in the house. What am I going to do?"

When we visited the home today, we saw a few bees still circling.
