You have enough time to prepare and mark your calendars for the annual Kidney Walk in March. It starts off at the ITVET on March 3rd at 5:30 in the morning. The president of the Belize Kidney Association says the proceeds from this march make a big difference in the lives of those suffering from renal failure.
Oscar Itch, President, Kidney Association of Belize
"We have been on an educational awareness campaign and what the association is doing since 2014 we have been doing a Kidney walk to bring awareness. This year it is on March 3rd at 5:30 am. We start off at the ITVET compound."
Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"And anybody can participate?"
"Definitely we are inviting the entire public, kids, adults whosoever it is. We invited the schools. We are hopeful we are going to have a large number of participants for this year. As a method of fundraising we have T-shirts on sale, for this year they are $20 we just have white 43:58 in color."
"Just tell us about the importance of the event and in terms of proceeds where the proceeds will go and how it will help those suffering from Kidney failure."
"What we have noticed over the years that there is an increase in patients suffering from renal failure due to the fact that diabetes and hypertension are the two main causes and in Belize high number suffering from diabetes and hypertension, some are suffering from both so as that increases renal failure is increasing also. Proceeds from all our fundraising event go to continue educational awareness campaign and also to assist kidney patients with their treatment, fistulas, dialysis treatment and whatever they may need, they would contact the association so we can assist them."
A raffle will be held at end of the Kidney Walk, so be sure to sign up. Apart from the march, a health fair will be held on March 9th at the St. Martin De Porres Swift Hall. It runs from 9:00 to 3:00. There will be free kidney function tests, blood sugar testing, eye tests among other free services.
