The Wrath Of The Math AT ACC
posted (February 14, 2018)
Today instead of hugging up and walking hand in hand with their Valentine's, Anglican Cathedral College students were at an all afternoon mathematics competition - loving up on some math problems - sounds fun right ? It was held at the Holy Redeemer Cathedral. There were two categories: Junior and senior. 16 students participated overall. We found out more at the event.

Ann Olivera Reyes, Head of the Math Department, Anglican Cathedral College
"This event started a three years ago. We used to do it in the classroom and it used to be an after school program where students decided whether they wanted to participate of not. This year we are moving it outside of the classroom so we can integrate the whole school body. We have over 400 students at the school and we are also integrating it as a sports day event so the winners of the competition gets 100 points that goes their house."

"The event is basically to stimulate students appreciation for mathematics and so we choose Valentine's day so instead of your love we are talking about the love of mathematics and so our theme is Math is love and that is the big occasion we are celebrating this year."

"We use topics that are more first and second form in the junior category and then third and forth in the senior category."

Courtney Weatherburne, reporter
"Tell us some of those math topics you are addressing here you know?"

Ann Olivera Reyes
"We are doing Algebra, Trigonometry we have some math equation and so forth and so students were given a study guide, they work with their house moderators and their math teachers to get their self-prepared and so basically the students that you see on stage are the top students in the school at this moment."

Tyrell Audinett, Senior Category
"When I first started I didn't really love math that much but I reached at high school and I started to realize you get through it then I kinda fell in love with it a little bit because I had fun with it, like real fun."

The teams were divided up by house - the Usher House got 1st place. The team mates are: Brizuela Rafael, Darlee Gentle , Kenroy Gillett and Windell Pook. 2nd place went to the Dunn House. They included Mahfuj Ahmad, Jaheim Martinez, Camryn Briceno and Gregory Fisher.
