No New Contract For Contractor General
posted (February 16, 2018)
Cabinet has also had to consider the position of the Contractor General Godwin Arzu. In December, a motion to re-appoint him had to be withdrawn after the Senate pointed out that he had failed to submit his annual reports as required by law. In the two months since - he still has not submitted a report and the Prime Minister told the Amandala that he will move to a appoint a new contractor general. Today the Deputy Prime Minister had a slightly different interpretation:...

Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister
"All I know that the contract has not been renewed, we keep working on trying to get a new contractor general. I believe the media had ask me about this earlier this week, they certainly ask me as well about the contract of the Ombudsman and I know that we have voted to have a renewal of his contract, that is the Ombudsman. But as far as I know, we don't have the same kind of situation with the contractor general and we will keep working to ensure that we can have a contractor general in place as quickly as possible."

"Is there a reason why the contract wasn't renewed?"

Hon. Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister
"Well, as far as I know they were complaints primarily from the opposition about reports that ought to have been filed with the national assembly on the contracts that have been issued on the part of the government and that has not been forthcoming, so there are those even in the government who have very serious concerns about that, if we are going to be transparent and up front with how we operate then those reports are very important and so until we are able to get that kind of production from a contractor general then we might need to look somewhere else or if we agree to work with the same guy then that discussion will need to be handled very sternly."

According to the PM, the Ombudsman, Lionel Arzu will have his contract renewed in March.
