Horticulture In The ‘Hood
posted (February 16, 2018)
There's a new path to wellness and self - sustainability for Port Loyola residents. Thanks to one resident and a few big supporters along the way, the community will be gardening its own fruits and vegetables. We found out more at the launch of this urban gardening initiative today.

Janette Cutkelvin, Coordinator For The Jane Usher Urban Gardening Project
"The project is to provide food security for Jane Usher community and the surrounding areas and so that we could also save money in our pockets. The vegetables and plants that we are growing are the save us from going to the market, save us money for the bus, and now we know that we have fresh fruits and vegetables for our children. We grow it ourselves."

"We knew absolutely nothing about farming per say. Some people have grown their own plants and vegetables over the years. We got support from THe Ministry of Agriculture and it has been tremendous. We are growing sweet peppers, tomato, mint, sage, and basic things that we need to cook our food."

Jane Bennett, The University of The West Indies/Open Campus Belize
"I knew that the community in Port Loyola could not use their backyards for example to do the planting. Some of them had done but lost their gardens. We knew we had to do something above ground that would be sustainable. With the cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture, they are ass Ms. Janet Anderson said teaching the community how to use the technologies to grow fruits and vegetables within their homes to put food on the table and to hopefully generate some income."

The University of The West Indies and the Ministry of Agriculture have played a big role in assisting the community with the project. The first set of fruits and vegetables will be ready in June.
