Shady Tactics In Toledo
posted (February 16, 2018)
Last night on the news, you probably heard the Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington speaking all about the education efforts that will be launched as Belize moves toward a referendum on the ICJ.

But, in the Toledo District - things have gotten off to a controversial and questionable start. The allegation is that the Referendum unit of Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been on a door to door campaign to collect names of people who are "supporting the move to the ICJ". These efforts include checking IDs, asking for Social Security information, and asking respondents whether they support taking the case to the ICJ.

Yesterday, the Foreign Minister disputed and disowned these actions:...

Hon. Wilfred Elrington - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Belize
"We also had reaching out to the people down south. We had some people working down south and some members of the Indian community/indigenous community got a little concern because some of the questions that were being asked of them they were not happy with. Actually we had not authorize that either. So we seeking to sort that out."

No one has been able to say with certainty just who is behind the campaign, which still leaves the onus on the GOB.
