posted (February 20, 2018)
And from there Courtney and Codie took a boat over to Cocoa Plum Island Resort which has the distinct honour of getting named in the Trip Advisor awards for being among the top 10 hotels in the world for Best Small Hotels.

Courtney found out how they've earned that mark of distinction:..

A 30 minute boat ride off the coast of Dangriga lands you in paradise - Coco Plum Island and Resort. And with that sweet tropical blend, the island fun begins.

There is something to do everyday - these buddies enjoy going at the corn hole. These guests like to challenge each other at a few rounds of horse shoe. While this crowd loves hanging out by the bar and eating delicious beef tacos.

Others rather be pampered at the spa. And if that isn't enough, there are plenty of other activities and tours guests can enjoy.

And I went on one of those tours - my first time snorkeling. It was terrifying at first but once I got the breathing technique down, the sea opened up to me:

Alexander Romero, Guest Service Manager
"Let's say on a normal 7 night package that is inclusive of three snorkeling trips and two inland tours. The snorkeling trips are on Monday's Wednesday's Thursday's and Saturday's. The inland tour days are on Tuesday's and Friday's but every single day a part from what is included in the package we have different activities. For example on Monday's we have our snorkeling trips and then in the evening we have our hermit crab race where all the guests are asked if they want to be part of it and if they do participate they have the opportunity to win prizes."

"Then on Wednesday we have snorkeling trips and Karaoke night. And a lot of the guests look forward to karaoke nights because as you know we have Swervin Irvin and he is one of the best when it comes to singing."

Those are just a few of the day time activities. To wind down in the evenings, guests can have a romantic candle light dinner.

And for those who want more privacy like Kris and Todd , there is a lovely outdoor set up on the dock.

Now relaxing in one their 18 cabanas is also a real treat. This is one of the suite styled rooms.

There are also premium suites, standard rooms. And one exquisite villa - one that this Georgia couple has pretty much claimed as their second home.

Bonnie Ellerbee, Return Guest
"This is our 13th time of coming, this is not the only place we travel to but it is the only place keep coming back to over and over and over again."

"We come back for the obvious beauty but probably honestly truthfully the main reason is because of the staff and the Belizean people."

That's why everyone else keeps coming back too.

Lori Murphy, Return Guest
"It's not just the place, it's the people that work here they are like family and they treat you like family, the really make it so special. You couldn't imagine being any other place in the world."

Kris Rocha, Return Guest
"This is our 3rd visit here, we stayed for two weeks and we love it it's so great to come back and see all the staff and lots of return guests too so it is a great place to have fun."

And it's that 'Belizean owned and operated approach that creates the rare family connection on this private island getaway - It's a strategy that has garnered them international awards:

Kimberly Zabaneh, Co-owner
"I think the number one thing that sets us apart and that makes both properties really unique is the fact that we are a Belizean owned company therefore we are able to really offer that genuine Belizean hospitality that we all know and love."

Coco Plum is the only Belizean hotel listed in the World category for the trip advisor traveler's choice awards.
