UDP Dominant in Cayo
posted (February 21, 2018)
Now in Cayo, the UDP stole the show with all their antics and lively presentations. And how did the PUP do in this UDP stronghold? You be the judge. Here's that story.

Courtney Weatherburne reporting
It was as if the PUP had already won as they zoomed through Cayo Streets after the nomination signing this morning.

They all had nothing but smiles, waves...and chants of excitement. Sure they had the energy on the streets

But when the supporters gathered under a tent at the Macal River Park, it was a different scene - more low key. The turnout wasn't impressive either, but PUP Standard Bearer Michel Chebat says that people shouldn't get caught up in today's numbers.

Michel Chebat - PUP Standard Bearer
"Today is very important for us because our candidates are now official. They are in the starting block and they are ready to go. Today is an exciting day for us. Our supporters are out here, it gets the machinery going. People are hyped. We are getting ready for the 7th. This is no indication of anything. We are happy with the crowd we have. This is the crowd we expected. This happens every time. We are good."

Ramon Marconi Matus - PUP Mayoral Candidate
"We have been campaigning. We have been on the ground for 4 and a half months now. The reception is very good. People say we need a change. We want a change and we will have a change. Right now we have 2 weeks left for the elections and we feel very good, comfortable, because we are going to win the elections the 7th of March. We have been campaigning on the platform of transparency and accountability that this present town board doesn't have."

Well what the UDP team had this afternoon were greater numbers and a lot of contagious energy. The Santa Elena crowd brought their band and joined the supporters from the other UDP controlled constituencies in front of the San Ignacio Police Station.

Dr. Omar Figueroa - Cayo North, UDP Area Rep.
"You know the Twin Towns of San Ignacio and Santa Elena comprised of 3 constituency, portions of 3 constituency. So, what we have here today is the San Ignacio portion, the Cayo North and Cayo Northeast. The crowd is very is excited, we are very happy. We are here of course to nominate the mayor Mayor Earl Trapp, and the 7 councilor candidates. I'm here as the Area Representative for Cayo North with my supporters as well and I'm also here to nominate Bernadette Fernandez. So, I have 2 duties here today."

Earl Trapp - UDP Mayor
"Out of the 6 elections that I ran, I feel more comfortable with this one and the reason is because of the simple fact or the important fact that while we have been in and out of the houses of the friendly people here in the municipalities. The people are warmly welcoming us and they are very much satisfied with all the developments that have come through my tenure as Mayor since 2015. So, we feel very much confident that this will definitely be one of the biggest victory in the history of Belize."
