Attorneys Extradition Case Lumbers On
posted (February 22, 2018)

3 weeks ago, we showed you the latest in the extradition proceedings against attorney Andrew Bennett. He's currently out on bail while the Magistrate's Court decides whether or not he should be sent to the US to stand trial for 7 counts of money laundering.

He was to return today before Chief Magistrate Sharon Frazer so that his attorney could indicate whether or not they would object to the official extradition file from the US Government being admitted into evidence against him.

At the last hearing, Solicitor General Nigel Hawke asked a Foreign Affairs employee to officially present the document before the Chief Magistrate, for her authentication.

But, instead of returning today for the continuation of the extradition proceedings, the two sides asked for an adjournment. We got a chance to speak with Solicitor General Nigel Hawke about the slight delay in the case:

Nigel Hawke - Solicitor General
"We made come commitments in terms of disclosure. What we did do is disclose a copy of the document. I think we hit a little snag in that there is the original document that the other side requested that were are supposed to supply to them, I think we should receive those documents between today and tomorrow so hopefully we'll have that sent to them so that we can then move forward with the process of they indicating their objects that they have. So the other side with our agreement did request a shot adjournment so we could have those document in so that each side will have an opportunity to properly respond to the court based on the objections that they have."

Daniel Ortiz
"Are you able to indicate at this time you expect objections from the defendant?"

Nigel Hawke
"I anticipate objections, I think they made it clearly they may have some objections but we don't know what those objections are."

We'll keep following the progress of these extradition proceedings.
