How Many Drop Out?
posted (February 22, 2018)

The Ministry of Education is collaborating with the UNICEF and UNESCO to determine just how many Belizean children drop out of school.

In 2010, UNICEF and the UNESCO Institute for Statistics launched a global Out-of-School Children Initiative.

They’ve been in Belize since 2016 to carefully study the out-of-school population of children, and they’ve presented their findings to the Government.

Today at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel, a working group of education technocrats were assembled to review the results and start brainstorming strategies to combat the growing number of children who are out of school.

We stopped by the sessions to speak with the Deputy Chief Education Officer about the importance of these results:

In this particular survey, 46 schools were involved in the interview process. The surveyors interviewed principals, teachers, school counsellors, PTA members, parents, students, and children and adolescents who dropped out, or were at risk of dropping out.
