Unseasonal Rain Ruining Crops
posted (February 23, 2018)
Last night we showed you how the excessive rains threw a damper on the PUP's Belize City manifesto launch. But while that was inconvenient, it's nothing compared to the losses that the rains have caused in the agricultural sector.

A release from the ministry says that the unusually excessive rainfall in January and February destroyed crops, particularly grains, fruits, root crops, and vegetables.

The Ministry has launched a damage assessment in a farming zones to find out how much has been lost in value and foodstuff - even as the rains are ongoing.

So far though, the rains have caused shortages in lettuce, cauliflower, and broccoli on the market.

And, we have learned that those farmers we featured in San Carlos a month ago - have also lost massive stocks of potatoes and onions.

And while those farmers are now struggling to meet their bank and credit union payments, the government has to keep vegetables available at your community market. So the Belize Marketing and Development Corporation is being allowed to import for the next two weeks. The good news is that profits made from this will go towards recovery relief provided to affected farmers.
