Dangriga Cops Will Be Charged Disciplinarily
posted (February 27, 2018)
3 police officers will have to answer to disciplinary charges for the death of 44 year old Sarawee villager Humphrey Mitchel. The 3 officers went to pick him at his T&H Kool Spot on Saturday afternoon around 3:00 on a committal warrant. But as they were heading to the Dangriga Police Station, Mitchel allegedly jumped out of the pan of truck at mile 3 on the Southern Highway. He was trying to escape but instead his head slammed unto the pavement and he died. Now as you heard, ACP Chester Williams, Commander of the Professional Standards Branch is investigating this matter. In his interview, he stated that this situation could have been avoided if the officers had put Mitchel inside the truck and have two officers sit on either side of him. The police didn't handcuff Mitchel either. Another element in this case is that the camera on the truck was disconnected from the 19th so it didn't capture anything that happened. That camera should be on at all times and the driver of the vehicle should have ensured that the camera was connected and working properly. So for now the officers will only face disciplinary charges for neglect of duty, and no criminal charges at this time. But the file will be sent to DPP for a final decision.
