And from that heinous crime against that 1 year-old baby girl, we turn now the terrible shooting of a 1 year-old baby boy which happened in Belize City. Baby Gregory Mena continues to be hospitalized at the KHMH at this time, where doctors are trying to do what they can to save 3 of the toes on his right foot. He was shot in the street style murder of 32 year-old Jermaine Carr, which happened at the child's home on Neal Penn Road.

Now, the residence where the shooting happened is one big family yard, and there are 3 houses are close together. The child's extended family all live there together,  and last night, at around 9 o'clock, there were a number of young children, and women who were socializing at the front house. That didn't stop a brazen gunman from barging in, and opening fire on Carr, who was socializing with his young daughter. After that, the shooter then took aim at Baby Gregory and shot him as well. 

It's the kind of heartless crime that is just plain incomprehensible, and today, our news team found out that the lives of innocents were at risk last night.

Today, when we visited, we found the families living in this yard still in a state of shock at a brazen shooting which resulted in the murder of 32 year-old Jermaine Alexander Carr, and the hospitalization of Gregory Mena, a 1 year-old child. 

Though only 3 people were injured, it could have been a mass casualty because there were innocent women and children in this home. 

This dent in the wall indicates where one of the bullets struck, a reminder that gun violence visited their house and stripped away the sense of safety that this family once had. 

It was a regular visit Jermaine would visit his daughter, which he shares with Kayla Stevens, the mother of Baby Gregory. We're told that Jermaine often came to drop off money for his child, and in these moments, they would enjoy some father/daughter bonding. 

It should have been just another night of pleasant memories, but a gunman barged in.

"He parked his cycle outside like he usually does, and he came in. He was talking to my sister about Britney, and she stood up beside her father."

"In the yard beside the table because they were gonna play dominoes. My older aunt, and my little cousin, they stood up around the table because a next cousin when for the dominoes from inside. So they were standing up by the table, and they were waiting. The same time, she was talking to her dad, while he was focusing on the phone, and that's when it happened."

"And then went to a group of persons that were siting inside of the hall, in a sofa, resulting on injuries to the minor."

The family tells us that Baby Gregory was standing near the front door dancing. The adults had music playing for him, which we are told is something the toddler likes. Immediately after Jermaine was gunned down, the shooter turned his attention to the nearby family members that were right inside. A shot was fired through the open front door, and the toddler, who is too young to understand what was happening, was injured on one of his toes.

"They saw my mother in the chair with my sister-in-law, and my 2 weeks-old niece and they shot in the house, and my nephew got shot the same time. Right now, we are trying to see what will happen because we don't even know if he will walk right now, and he's 1 year-old and change."

That same bullet ricocheted off the ground and just missed one of the ladies sitting on the sofa. The dent in the wall marks where she would have been hit in the head. Fortunately, she hunched over to protect herself and a 2 weeks-old baby who was in her arms. She ended up only getting grazed on the left jaw by the gunshot, but Baby Gregory wasn't so lucky. We are told that he went into surgery at the KHMH today; the doctors are trying save his toe. He's completely innocent of  the violence which will leave scars on him.

But, what about Jermaine Carr, why did the shooter want him dead?

"Well, I know that the gunman went directly to Mr. Carr, and thereafter, he encountered the other persons who were inside the house, and that's when he started firing shots at them."

"For them to kill Jermaine like that, it's  really uncalled for because Jermaine is not a problem person. That guy is all about love."

This evening, we spoke with 1 year-old Gregory's mother Kayla Stevens. She told us that the doctors are trying their best to repair the 3 damaged toes on his right foot. It includes his  big toe, and though none of digits were completely severed, the doctors are trying to completely re-attach them. There is a worry that he might not be able to walk normally, even if the doctors are successful. 

And, as you would expect, there is trauma all around from this shooting. The women of the family saw how the attack played out, and so did a few of the children. But, the one who the family is most worried about is Jermaine Carr's 12 year-old daughter. She was right beside him, and they were talking when the shooter gunned him down.

As to Jermaine Carr himself, his baby's mother Kayla Stevens told us that he had no personal connection the streets. He worked as an electrician.  She describes him as a person who diligently went to work, after which, he would head straight over to spend time with his daughter before heading home for the end of the day. 

She told us that she suspects that the gunman may have come looking for a family member of his, but settled for taking his life instead. 

Finally, we note that there is a discrepancy between the police version and the family's version. They have given us a detailed account about how this attack was carried out by 2 gunmen. Police have asserted that there was only one shooter.
