April Inflation Was Almost 6%
posted (May 25, 2022)
You don't need the Statistical Institute of Belize to confirm that prices are sky high - but today the SIB confirmed that the national inflation rate for the month of April was 5.8%. That means that the goods and services most typically purchased by citizens increased by an average of 5 cents on the dollars when compared to April of last year.

Transport, which was driven by rapidly rising fuel prices, was up by 16.8%.

While there were increases across all of the food sub-categories, inflation within this category was mainly driven by higher prices for fresh vegetables, cereal products, meats, cooking oils, and fish and other seafood. Items that saw notable increases during the month included tomatoes, cabbages, Irish potatoes, sweet peppers, watermelons, coconut oil, vegetable oil, pigtail, poultry products, rice, and flour. Nonetheless, decreases were noted among a few food items, such as cake baking mix, bananas, oranges, black beans, and red kidney beans.

Compared to a year ago, the price of Tomatoes was up 124%, the price of cabbage up 76% and pigtail up 56%.

Orange Walk Town had the highest inflation of 9.4%, while Belmopan had the lowest at 4.3%. The Twin towns of Ignacio and Santa Elena had an inflation rate of 4.6%.
