Benquenos Bex About Oil Spill
posted (October 12, 2022)
Benquenos are bex about an oil spill caused by Westline bus.

The Department of the Environment has confirmed that it originated at a site managed by Westline Bus Co. And according to the DOE, the company did not report it.

In a press release, DOE says they inspected the site today and observed the spill on land and discharging into a nearby drain. The release continues, quote, "It was determined that a container having a capacity of about 1,100 gallons and storing waste oil, which is classified as a hazardous substance under the Environmental Protection Act, had ruptured resulting in the oil spill. The site in question is located on a slope causing the spilled oil to run into a drain, which leads into the Mopan River." End quote.

DOE added that the exact quantity of the oil spilled cannot be determined at this time since the company has no record of the amount of oil that was stored. And while there is no indication at this time that the oil has indeed entered the Mopan River, it is possible that contamination can occur once the floodwaters recede.

DOE's team on the ground has been able to contain the spill along with the employees of the bus company, and they will continue to supervise the cleanup activities in the coming days.

The release ends by saying that in the meantime, DOE has issued a pollution abatement notice to the company to ensure the necessary measures are implemented to avoid further environmental impacts. They will also be seeking legal advice in the prosecution of the offense and the levying of applicable penalties under the EPA.
