Constitutional Committee
posted (November 14, 2022)
You've been hearing about it for months, The People's Constitutional reform Committee, a major task force comprised of every type of Belizean, and set to revamp the document that's considered Belize's most fundamental legal instrument, Belize's Constitution.

Well tonight that Commission has finally been launched and rounding out the ceremony were some encouraging words from PM Briceno who encouraged the Committee members to quote: " reaffirm what we hold dear to us, our democracy, and our desire to build a Belize that works for everyone."

Here's more from that speech.

Hon. John Briceno, Prime Minister
"The launch of the People's Constitution Commission is important for several reasons including the fact that when we are out campaigning, we promise to be a government that was transparent and responsible. In our good governance agenda, we said that we wanted to be a government that was responsive to the challenges of our generation and to do what we needed meaningful reforms that would once again put people first. We are here in part to do exactly that. Today we embarked on a journey that when successful will ensure more government by the people and a government for the people. Our constitution says in its preamble that the will of the people shall form the basis of government in a democratic society. It goes on to say that all persons may to the extent of their capacity play some part in institutions of national life."

"For our part this constitution commission is intended to make good on this promise enshrined in our constitution. It is our sincere desire to have the people determine the kind of government they want, not something they inherited, but a system that at its core is progressive, inclusive and 100% Belizean. It is this process that must listen to the people to ensure that the reforms adopted will be inclusive and will put people at the center of national life."

The PM also added that the constitution remains the country's most fundamental legal instrument and establishes the rights, processes and institutions that guide how the country functions and how power and resources should be shared.

We'll have more from the entire Constitutional Reform Committee Launch tomorrow.
