PM Not Taking Sides In City Admin Battle
posted (April 16, 2024)
And while he's not fighting, there is a fight in the council - and - bottom line - that's not what folks voted for 6 weeks ago.

We today asked the PM if he considered it a political embarrassment. He doesn't. He says it's democracy - and hopes that the matter will resolve itself without his involvement.

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"I've always said that these issues are the decision of the council and we can only advise. As I know that most of the PUP representatives in Belize City, at least four of them, are supporting Albert Vaughn but again that's a matter for the council and I'm hoping this will be resolved today."

Courtney Menzies:
"Who are you supporting as Prime Minister?"

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"I don't think it is for me to support, I will work with whosoever the council decides that they want to have as the city."

Courtney Menzies:
"Do you find it as a political embarrassment considering it's a month after the elections and there's this fighting going on when this isn't what the voters voted for?"

John Briceno, Prime Minister
"Well, it's not necessarily, the voters they voted for councils who are going to represent their interest and if the councillors believe they want somebody else and that's their right and I wish we could have done it better of course but it's not a matter that, oh, I'm upset, or whatever, it is a part of the democratic process."
