As you saw, the Compol was listening in keenly on the Minister's interview - almost like a big man chaperone. And, in his interview, he made sure to save his minister some face by saying he does answer to the Minister of Home Affairs - kinda:
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"Basically as the Commissioner of Police I do answer to the Minister of Home Affairs. Myself and the Honorable Kareem Musa speak on a daily basis. When something happens, I brief him and I would keep him abreast of what is taking place. I don't know where you get the notion from that I do not want to answer to Kareem because that is not true. Myself and Minister Musa have a very good working relationship, there is absolutely no issue. I can say in front of his face and behind his back, he is one of the best ministers I've worked with. Peyrefitte was good too, I will give that to Peyrefitte because the truth is if I were to be told by another minister to do certain things that I believe is wrong, if I go to Peyrefitte and say, ComPol if you don't feel it's right, don't do it. And Kareem is just like that. So I will say to you that we have that respect for each other and the cordial relationship in terms of how we work. The minister is a great supporter of the department, every event we have, he would normally attend. He doesn't find excuses not to be there, it's just unfortunate that with the awards ceremony, it was my fault, I gave him the invitation late and he could not have attend because he had other events."
Jules Vasquez:
"How will you give the keynote speaker invitation late?"
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"He did expressed his apologies for not being able to attend and that was told to the rank and file. In terms of the prime minister, I barely speak to the prime minister, maybe once a month per se, if something major were to happen and I cannot get my minister then I would inform the prime minister because the prime minister would normally be briefed by the minister. Or sometimes if I would brief my minister about certain things, I would ask him if he wants me to brief PM or if he wants to brief the PM and he would say, ComPol you go ahead and brief PM, or he would do it. So I really and truly don't know who is feeding you things that there is no relationship between me and the minister. And in terms of my appointment, yes I am appointed by the governor general and you can see the constitution of Belize which clearly states that the Commissioner of Police is appointed by the governor general on the recommendation of the prime minister."
