Yesterday we told you the heart-wrenching story of an elderly woman who was killed in a fire in Dangriga. Her son told us that 69 year old Sonia Sambula lived with her grandkids and he believed they dashed out of the house without her - which we stress is one version of the story. We asked the ComPol whether charges could be brought against them.
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"While he may have a moral obligation, legally, I don't think he has a legal obligation. I guess he was running to save his own life and perhaps he believed that he could not have saved her and saved himself so he ran. If it were a police or a fire personnel who would have a legal obligation maybe, but even though that legal obligation would be there, the law would have still have to look at what risk it would imposed to them so I don't think we'll be able to bring any charges."
Reporter:
"For the record, the grandson did say he went back into the home to try to save her but it was too hot and he had to run out."
Chester Williams, Commissioner of Police
"So we can't do anything about that, no."
